“I’ve finally booked an appointment… but what happens next?”

If this thought has crossed your mind… you’re not alone.

For many people, the first counselling session brings curiosity, hope, and nervousness. Questions like… “What will the counsellor ask?”“Will I have to talk about everything?”“What if I don’t know where to begin?”… are completely natural.

So… let’s take the mystery out of it.

Think of It Like a GPS…

Imagine you’re driving to a place you’ve never visited before.

A GPS first needs to know your current location before it can guide you to your destination.

First… it needs to know where you are.

Only then can it calculate the best route.

Counselling works much the same way.

Before discussing solutions, your counsellor first tries to understand where you are emotionally… what has been happening in your life… what you’ve already tried… what’s helping… and what’s making life more difficult. Only then can both of you decide the best path forward.

 Psychology Behind It

When we experience intense stress, anxiety, or emotional distress, our thinking can become narrow and less flexible. Psychologists understand that strong emotions can make it harder to see options, solve problems, or make balanced decisions. A counsellor doesn’t take over your journey—they help you slow down, gain perspective, and discover the path that was always there.

Before Anything Else… A Few Formalities

Every counselling journey begins with a few important formalities.

You may be asked to complete an intake form, discuss informed consent, and understand confidentiality. You’ll also have an opportunity to ask questions about the counselling process, privacy, or session structure.

These steps help create a safe, respectful, and confidential space where you can speak openly.

What Brings You Here Today?

One of the first questions you may hear is…

“What brings you here today?”

There isn’t a perfect answer.

Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed, struggling with relationships, worried about your child, or simply hoping life feels different… your reason matters.

Your counsellor isn’t searching for the “right” answer. They are trying to understand your experience.

You Don’t Have to Tell Everything on Day One

Many people think they must share every painful memory during the first session.

You don’t.

Trust develops gradually, and you decide the pace. Good counselling never forces disclosure. Instead, it creates a space where sharing becomes easier as trust grows.

There Is No Right or Wrong Way to Attend Counselling

Some people talk a lot… some become emotional… some cry… some sit quietly… and some simply say, “I don’t know where to begin.”

Every response is okay.

Your counsellor isn’t expecting a perfect story. They simply want to understand your story.

Working Together Towards Meaningful Goals

Counselling is a collaborative process. It is not an examination or an interrogation. It is two people working together to understand, explore, and move towards positive change.

Sometimes a goal is as simple as, “I just want to feel less overwhelmed.” That is enough to begin.

A Special Note for Parents

If you’ve come with your neurodiverse child, don’t worry if the first session takes a little longer.

Every child is unique. Understanding your child’s developmental history, strengths, challenges, family environment, and your concerns helps us plan the most appropriate support together.

Before the Session Ends…

Before the session ends, you’ll have time to ask questions, discuss recommendations, and decide the next steps together. If appropriate, your counsellor may also suggest a simple reflection or activity before the next session.

Remember… you don’t have to leave your first session with all the answers. Sometimes, simply feeling heard and understood is the most meaningful beginning.

From My Counselling Room…

One thing I’ve often heard from clients after their first session is…

“I was so anxious before coming… but it wasn’t what I had imagined.”

If you’ve been thinking about counselling… you don’t need perfect words or all the answers.

Just come… as you are.

One conversation may not solve everything… but it can begin everything.

And sometimes… that’s the most important step of all.
